A Climate for Change

Since 1984, when office based ultrasounds became an accepted standard of care, various consumer groups, medical societies and governmental and insurance based organizations have attempted to establish regulatory and reporting guidelines for this self-regulated industry. In 1997, the American College of Radiology and The Physicians Insurers Association of America published the result of a "Practice Standards Claims Survey" [View PDF (828KB)] that found the following in OB/GYN ultrasound cases:

  • Diagnostic errors were observed in more than 80% of the cases evaluated
  • 67% of ultrasound reports were not considered accurate
  • 70%+ of suspicious anomalies failed to be accurately documented

This study jump started the movement towards changes in Accreditation, Billing Reimbursement, Medical Legal Requirements and a clearly defined standard of care for all ultrasound examinations.
